Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – Southeast Alaska will be well represented in the championship games of the March Madness Alaska 2022 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska 1A/2A Basketball State Championships on Saturday at Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center with the 1A Klawock High School girls, 2A Wrangell girls, and 2A Metlakatla boys playing for titles.


  The No.1 seed Wrangell Lady Wolves defeated the No.4 Glennallen Panthers 33-25 in a Friday 2A girls semifinal.

  Wrangell faces No.2 Tikigaq for the championship on Saturday.

  Wrangell led 13-8 after eight minutes, 17-14 at the half, and 21-19 after three quarters.

  Kiara Harrison and Kendra Meissner had 11 points apiece for the Lady Wolves. Jamie Early added seven, Liana Carney and Kayla Meissner two apiece. Harrison had eight rebounds and Early six. K. Meissner had two steals. Harrison and Early had two assists apiece.

  Wrangell did not shoot a free throw in the game, Glennallen hit 1-2. The Lady Wolves had nine turnovers, the Panthers eight.

  CeAnika Palacios led the Panthers with 12 points. Cheyenne Fields added eight and Teagan Rude five.  Palacios and Kristin Ewan had six rebounds apiece.

  The No.3 Metlakatla MisChiefs fell 50-45 to the No.2 Tikigaq Harpooners in the other 2A girls semifinal.

  Tikigaq led 12-9 after eight minutes, 19-17 at the half, and the score was tied 32-32 after three quarters.

  Ryley Booth led the MisChiefs with 19 points, Bree Chavez added 10 points, Lexi Cook and Sarai Buffalo six apiece, Kennedy Cook and Ava Petatrovich two apiece. L.Cook had seven rebounds and Buffalo six. Chavez had four steals and four assists.

  Metlakatla hit 5-16 at the free throw line, Tikigaq 5-8. The MisChiefs had 19 turnovers, the Harpooners 17.

  Jennifer Nash led the Harpooners with 20 points. Virginia Teayoumeak added nine points, Ella Kowunna eight, Tatyana Nashookpuk six, Jadyn Lane four and Tahlia Lane three. Kowunna had nine rebounds and Nash five steals.

  Metlakatla and Glennallen play for third/fifth place on Saturday.

  The No.3 Klawock Lady Chieftains defeated the No.2 Lumen Christi Archangels 45-34 in a Friday 1A girls semifinal.

  Klawock will face No.1 Newhalen in the 1A championship on Saturday.

  Klawock led 12-7 after eight minutes and 20-15 at the half. Lumen Christi led 26-24 after three quarters. Klawock outscored Lumen Christi 21-8 in the final stanza.

  Kenai Holien led the Lady Chieftains with 25 points. McKinley Holien added nine points, Lea Armour and Zoey Edenshaw four apiece, and Kaiya Marvin three. K. Holien had 11 rebounds and Marvin nine. K. Holien had four steals.

  Klawock hit 17-29 at the free throw line, Lumen Christi 8-16. The Lady Chieftains had 25 turnovers, the Archangels 21.

  Amara Warren led the Archangels with 12 points. Emily Ross added 10 points, Natalie Grubba and Sabrina Warren six apiece. Leyla Tiernan had 10 rebounds. Ross had seven steals.

  In 2A boys, the No.3 Metlakatla Chiefs topped the No.2 Tikigaq Harpooners 78-73 in a Friday semifinal.

  Metlakatla will face No.1 Ninilchik in the 2A boys championship on Saturday.

  Metlakatla led 17-14 after eight minutes but Tikigaq led at the half 38-26 at the half, and 51-41 after three quarters.
