NAVI MUMBAI: After installing over 3,000 LED lights in the urban pockets in PCMC jurisdiction, the civic body is spending around Rs 12 crore to illuminate roads and chowks in over 65 villages under the erstwhile 29-gram panchayats in PCMC area.
This is a major step towards improving amenities in villages. As many as 3,500 street light poles have been erected in the rural pockets. The project was approved in 2019 however the pandemic became a stumbling block.
According to PCMC sources, over 95% LED lights have been fixed so far. Remaining work will soon be completed, said PCMC. “Our focus was to illuminate the roads in villages and the project is almost complete. It is major infrastructure work for the rural pocket to maintain equality between urban and ‘gaothan’ areas,” said PCMC Commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh. Residents of villages had been complaining about lack of streetlights on village roads for years.
