The Ohio Public Utilities Commission (PUCO) announced last week it approved the installation of LED lights at 100 grade crossings owned by Norfolk Southern Railway.
Costs for the installations total $750,000 to be paid by the commission, with NS responsible for costs exceeding $7,500 per crossing, PUCO officials said in a press release. NS is expected to complete construction work by June 2023. The crossings are located in Cuyahoga, Erie, Fulton, Lorain, Lucas, Ottawa, Williams and Wood counties.
The funds come from the state’s LED upgrade program, established in 2012, which seeks to improve visibility and reduce maintenance requirements by upgrading 8-inch incandescent lights to 12-inch LED lights at crossings equipped with flashing light signal systems.
Since the program’s inception, Ohio has seen a reduction of complaints regarding active warning devices at crossings, PUCO officials said.
