More than 1,500 poinsettias will also be planted along the main streets in the Murcia town

Puerto Lumbreras will turn on its Christmas lights next week to “illuminate hope” and promote shopping locally to give shops and other businesses a much-needed boost.

Around six million LED lights will brighten up the town’s streets and create a festive atmosphere from Wednesday night, December 1, and more than 1,500 poinsettias will also be planted ahead of next week’s big switch-on. A date and time have still to be confirmed.

The lights have low energy consumption, are “highly efficient” and reduce CO2 emissions, which, in addition to saving money, helps to protect the environment and combat climate change, explained the local authority.

And, as in previous years, the façade of the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario will be illuminated,

A special program of festive events and activities for all the family is also being finalised to attract as many people as possible to the town centre.

“We want to continue to contribute to lighting up hope amongst the people of Lumbreres with the Christmas lights switch-on, the hope of gradually winning the battle against Covid and its financial impact through the vaccination campaign and great work of health workers, although we must remain cautious.

“We also hope to ‘light up’ shopping and consumption in our shops and catering establishments, which are fundamental sectors for the local economy, employment and the life of the city, and which we must continue to support,” explained town mayor, María Ángeles Túnez.
