Worcester unveils new underpass lights near Polar Park – Spectrum News 1
WORCESTER, Mass. – There’s a new look for the Canal District in Worcester as a bridge underpass is retrofitted with specialty art lighting.
Friday evening, city leaders held a press conference to showcase the new lighting installed on the Green Street underpass. The LED lights will have a full range of colors and the ability to control every individual light element. The lighting can be choreographed to mark certain occasions and causes, similar to the Burns Bridge which connects Worcester and Shrewsbury. The project was made possible through a $250,000 grant given out by the Baker-Polito administration. The city manager says the lighting is inviting and welcoming, and was installed to enhance a popular area between Downtown Worcester and the Canal District, particularly on game days at Polar Park.
“This has become kind of a really busy connection between these two neighborhoods and people are walking back and forth all day long.” City Manager Ed Augustus said. “Whether they were walking to get lunch from downtown into the Canal District, or they’re parking down in the Canal District, or walking to the library, it’s a great way to kind of weave together two great neighborhoods of Worcester.”
More underpasses will have led lights installed in the coming months.
